Me too Patch.

I have grown to like the earlier Vettes for their nostalgia and simplicity. The Mako Shark era (C3 68-92) is only now endearing itself with time. The C4s, can't see ever liking them. Had a C5 & C6, great cars but new!

Vettes seem a lot like Barths to me. They bucked the material trend and Vettes were built in an independent GM plant that had pride in workmanship that was a cut above. Hey, even the Europeans love them!

The C2 era (1963-1967) were inspired by Italian and the British sports car lines. One of the GM designers had owned a Jaguar XKE and you can see some of the lines from that iconic car. The 67 is the "cleanest" C2 with most of the non-functional body parts removed and cleaned up. It almost didn't happen and that's why 67s are low numbers and sought after. The Mako Shark (C3) was to be introduced in 68, but they had issues with the air flow at speed. The result was a last minute decision to run another year of the C2.

Some distinctive features are the functional Gills on the side, the rear back up light were put to the center rear, the last year of the venerable and bullet-proof Powerglide AT, and the first year of the iconic Chevy Rally wheels.

Another bit of Corvette trivia. Ever see a 1983 Corvette. The C4 was late coming out, so it was introduced as a 1984. There was not a Corvette in the 1983 model year.

Nice ride Corey.
I personally like the '63 split window, as it was only ever made that one year. I believe those C2's are the most desirable to collectors because of the styling, short production years and advances in technology (the end of solid axles and more room in the cabin). The C1's are the next most desirable. You will normally pay big money for those years if they are documented and well maintained by the owner.
I think the prolonged production of the C3 (1968-82) have hurt their collectabilty. And the major design change of the C4 (Nick is correct---that is why there was no 1983) make them the least desirable and the most reasonable for one that wants to own a Corvette. Seems the C5's are following that route also, as they can be bought very reasonable considering the advances in technology they offer over the C4.

Thanks Nick and Bruce.

I always liked the 63 Split Window too. Here in Florida it wouldn't be the right car due to the anemic A/C if it had it at all. In researching about my 67 I read that Chevy offered a kit to open up the split rear window as like the 64 due to complaints from owners about visibility! So there may be some 63 split window coupes out there disguised to look like a 64.

I almost bought a '63 split-window when my '64 MB 220 SEb was sandwiched on I-75 in Atlanta. Screwups in the at-fault driver's insurance company finally resulted in $6K repairs to my Mercedes' $3K value (the 'vette was $2700).

It worked out OK, because I gave up playing with plastic cars when I was 17.

The '63 did not offer a/c as an option. The large headers on the 327 did not leave enough room. But of my four, it was the most reliable and well made.

I had a grey 1964 Corvette convertible in 1968 and it was one sweet ride. Nothing fancy, just a 350 (maybe a 283?) with, I guess, a four speed. But, as someone else said, it was the essence of simplicity. I could actually work on it. And it was plenty fast. Of course I was only 30.

Jim,

Would have been a 327, same as what's in mine. Not one stinkin computer on board!
