Ken; This is a service hatch for the air pollution pump. This is the only way to change the filter without removing the pump. You may have two pumps if it is a California spec. engine. The pass side pump went out and was replaced in 2005. The lid on ours comes loose and the sound will make you think the engine is going south on you. The filter is just a foam pad. We are still looking for a way to secure the lid better. Hope this helps. Smiler

I had the twin air pumps on my SOB. The lids never did clip on tightly, and the drumming noise was awful.

So I got some 3/16" threaded rod, and made two "U"s (squared and bent to conform to the canisters) from it. A piece of aluminum channel (1/2"x1/2" IIRC) went across the top, and I drilled holes for the "U" to fit through. A couple of wingnuts, and done.
