This came up the other day from an RV-owning neighbor: How do you drill a mounting hole in a framerail without damaging, with the drill bit, all the wiring and hoses that are there.

I use a short piece of tubing, insert it through the stuff, and drill through it...

+1......, but I first drill a pilot/locator hole with a depth stop tube to keep it from going more than just through the metal. Then I slip the tube in and use the hole to locate the tube and finish drilling completely.

And any hole in a frame should be midway between the bends, whenever possible. Or between the bend and the edge.
