trying to submit my smog (?) docs for my 1990 3208 cat motor on my Breakaway for California CARB ( Air Resources Board) . Not a prob as passed the emissions opacity test ( no visual smoke ) but they need a pic of the ECL (Emissions Control Label). Thats supposedly located on the left side (as you are looking at the front of the motor) valve cover which is completely covered by engine bay roof/ceiling and I can't get to it..easily..

Anyone have a pick of that decal/tag by chance..?

Might have this 'engine family' # on it: LPCT0636TEPC1 (not specific to my particular motor, just to the 'family' of cat motors those emmission specs are for..

have a call into Gillig in Hayward and to CAT central attempting to get a pic or at least what the tag lists..

Mike, Caterpillar places this tag on the valve cover, it contains all engine information including emissions information. It is typically about 2x3” in size. I don’t remember which valve cover.

FYI: 3208’s are subject to cavitation erosion! Be sure to maintain your coolant to prevent this. I believe there is an sacrificial anode in the block too, if not, add one!

Hey Billy, thanks for the input.. As I mentioned, it's on the left side valve cover as you look at the front of the motor. Just hoping someone has a pic of one in their vehicle photo archieves, so I actually can see the contents of it.. Really would like that!

Anyone aware of what other brands used 3208's back in the early 1990's? Foretravel, Blue Bird, Beaver, Elite, Monaco, and/or other Gillig or Oshkosh chassis rigs, etc..

California diesel emissions requirement has and is going up/down/sideways.

I got s notice from DMV that I had go to the CTC (Clean Truck Center) to be emissions tested. Steve, another 1994 Breakaway owner in Southern California, to get emission tested.he tried to work thru the system very frustrating! Finally he got the DMV registration, I don't think his was ever tested. Later, I received a renewal notice from DMV And I could go to the DMV kiosk directly and the notice had no emissions testing requirement. In and out of the kiosk in 5 minutes with my mew sticker.

Cummins never had any emissions label on the engine prior to 1997, just the serial number and the TDC timing setting.

later, I got a notice that diesel engines in RV prior to 1997 were exempt. Then later got a notice that all diesel powered vehicles >14,500 lb would require emissions testing.

Now with all the EPA changes good and bad I have no idea what is now required in California and 13 states that follow C.A.R.B. issues

Hey Ed, thanks for the input..I am DMV registered but not OK with Clean Diesel.. Had a mobile test guy come out and was passed//Don’t have an emissions label on my 1990 3208NA. Clean Truck wants that. Found a site thru CAT re: getting copies of tags/etc and tried to work my way thru it to no avail.

Tried first w/ motor serial # 02Z65044, no go then posted my ‘family’ name: LCT0636EPC1 And it came up on that form as existing. I.e., 3208 on road etc..but tried to get a copy and it would’nt proceed. I continue to go back and forth w/ CAT and CARB and continue to get same form response's, requesting same info that the tester submitted.. I’m currently traveling and will go to any CAT dealer I see and try to do an in-person request with my info..

All I need to proceed w/ CARB is the emissions tag copy..!
