The only guy I know that doesn't like bartering is Uncle Sam.

The old saying "a penny saved is a penny earned" is flawed. Depending on you tax bracket, a penny saved is worth about a penny and a half earned.

we thought about workcamping and there is a good website and magazine called Workcamper News. Over the years we met several campers who worked at various jobs, i.e. guarding construction sites and state/federal parks. Seems to be a good way to supplement your income, they usually supply a free campsite with hookups and you work around 20-25 hrs/week doing odd jobs like making sure everyone pays their fees or mow grass or clean restrooms. The Corps of Engineer campgrounds are manning the entry gate with workcampers. You get a campsite and a small paycheck. Give it a try!
