FYI- a friend told me of his incarceration in WWII in Barth, Germany. He was a pilot and was shot down. There are several sites on the web with pictures. This friend spent his time in the Red Cross library studying Shakespeare and learning French and German while coaching English. After release he earned his PhD in English at Stanford and completed a long tenure at UCD. I'm not sure how the two subjects are related but I thought were interesting.
