I was thinking....
In the Barth, Lovestogo has the GM Turbo Hydramatic 400 3 speed automatic transmission. Since I'm dreaming with his money, why not stay with a GM transmission, instead of installing the Gear Vendors overdrive unit? The GV hardware is something like $2-$3K plus installation. Yank the 400 and sell it, you might get a few hundred to a thousand. Then, go with a follow on transmission that GM developed, the 4L85E.

Info on this I found:

The 400 is a stronger transmission. The 4L80E requires a computer to operate. The 4L80E is expensive to repair, and requires more skill.

The main advantage of a 4L80E is the lockup torque converter. It saves a little gas and runs a lot cooler.

Final drive on the 4L80E is also an overdrive. I'm pleased with the performance, although it's busy...
