The 3208 came out around '70, as the 3208NA, 210-225HP, IIRC. The 3208T was introduced at 250HP, and the 3208TA made 300HP.

There were many versions of the 3208, however.

One last suggestion: Locate the engine serial number (on a plate on the block on the right rear side) and call any Cat Dealer and they will look up the exact specification for that engine and tell you precisely what it is.

Well, we are back home again for a while.......the plate on the engine says 3208, in the PERF SPEC box (my assumption is performance specifications) are the numbers OT6764. When I look at the operation and maintenance manual, quite clearly I can see the Turbocharger located near the top of the engine.

I can see it clearly, the manual has only 3 pictures, 3208 Naturally Aspirated Engine, 3208 Turbocharged Engine, and 3208 Engine With Air-to-Air Aftercooling. I think I can easily rule out the other two choices in engine selection, just be looking at the pictures it must be the 3208 Turbo.

Will attempt to call the Cat Dealer later this week and see what they tell us.........

Tina

When you call the Cat Dealer ask for the Service Manager. They will tell you there is a decal on the valve cover, passenger side or on the block, driver side. You will write down the numbers for Serial Number and then they can identify the history of the engine, when and where it was installed and all the upgrades and recalls that relate to your engine. You cannot order anything without the serial number, nor should you. I recommend that you try and locate the decal and if you can't then drive to their service department and let them find it. One advantage of a service relationship with CAT is the forever tracing of your engine and the upgrades they issue. They can tell you exactly what was installed and if there have been alterations what they are. Even if you use an independent service shop they can't get any parts without the history and the serial numbers. Do it wrong and a new engine is about 10k minimum.

Did just what you suggested Tom K. This morning I called our "local" Cat dealer. They confirmed what we were told. The 3208 IS indeed a Turbo. All I needed was the correct serial number (that's another story) and bingo, he found us in the computer and verified it.

Soooooooo, the 3208 is a Turbo. Smiler Thanks everyone for all your help in solving this.

Now the next question, Is it a 250HP turbo or is it a 300HP turbo with the cooler? Wink

OK Nick, the turbo issue is solved......the engine tag says clearly 250hp. I would suspect that if it were 300, the tag would indicate that?????

Not necessarily....I don't know about Cats, but Cummins (8.3s anyway) can have a plate that states the engines base HP and then a turbo or after-cooler add on also adds HP.

If it's listed in the SOLD FORUM, like this one is, then it is no longer available.

In this case, their coach was involved in a fire and was considered UNSALVAGEABLE.

Sadly, this is one less Barth for anyone to purchase now.

There is Nicks new Bumper!!!!. Hurry down and strip it out. The wheels look good and the rear bumper is probably OK and then the engine and tranny might also be OK.
