TN ~1993 Breakaway
You betcha. Just replaced the rear main seal and serviced the transmission with Transyend. $$ So the two things that will always go wrong with a Cummins 5.9, the exhaust manifold and the rear main seal, have both been fixed. $$$$

I am out of town and will check when home next week. I have never noticed a gauge that kept engine hours. It has 65000 miles, mostly interstate driving. If the average is 30mph, that would be 2000 hours. I can tell you it uses no oil, runs strong, and a 5.9 is a 400000+ engine.

Having just returned from out of town, I checked the instrument panel and on this particular Breakaway, there is no 'engine hours' gauge. There are comments on this subject elsewhere which state 30 to 35 mph is not a bad guess as to average speed on a motor home.

OK you snow birds. Here's your chance. The 93 Breakaway price is $17000. This Breakaway continues to impress me. And as I continue to make improvements (not expected maintenance), it is ever more of a good deal. A recent friend who's dad has a 91 28' Breakaway stopped by to drive it as a test for his dad. He said it handled 50% better than his Dad's '91. This may be the best 28' '93 out there. In fact, I'll challenge anybody, to show me a better one, especially at $17K

Hi Jim & Tere ,you may have missed my question about speed of your rig at 2000 rpm . I know you keep a close eye on this type of thing ,hope you will respond as I have to gather some information about this for the tranny shop. thanks paul

Paul, I'm about 60mph @ 2400 RPM. I think 2000 RPM would be close to 50mph. Next time I have it out, will check and let you know. What did you use to run at 2000RPM?

sure seems like it ought to be worth at least that.
It offers many of the same advantages Dr. Yale's offered to me in 2011: newer tires; newer shocks; recent engine/trans service; REAR WINDOW etc.
Too few DP's have a rear window. I thought it was GREAT driving to CA and back. like driving a van on steroids -- with center mirror I could look all the way through 30' and out the back. I attached one of those wide angle view lenses in order to see a little closer to the bumper.

Hello,

New the forum. I am interested in your Breakaway. I admit I am new to them, so I have lots of questions. I have been looking at Bluebirds for a while, but have decided to look for something lighter, more fuel efficient etc. I have looked at the Bounder of the mid 90's primarily for the Cummins Alison drivetrain, but... I like a real coach better. I have known of Barth for sometime, but was not familiar with the Breakaway... so now here I am. I am very familiar with Cummins 5.9 as I have had couple. I do not recall ever running at 2400rpm for extended periods. Mostly ran well below 2000rpm. Seems high to turn that at 60mph. What is the fuel mileage is at 60mph? Also, what is the weight? I am in California, but my Dad lives near you, in Decatur. I think I saw your number earlier in the thread I will try to call your tomorrow. One last question, is the paint original?
Thanks so much!!
Dean

The RPMs are determined by the transmission/differential combination. This Breakaway has the Allison 4-speed. The Dana 80 axle has a 373 in it. In talking to Cummins engineers, 2400 RPM is an 'all day long' operating range. It is also very quiet--you can hardly hear it running even with the bedroom door open. I get about 10.5 mpg at that speed. The GVWR of the coach is 18000#. I've never had it weighed dry but I would guess somewhere around 16500#. The paint is the original color. BTW, the previous owners were California people. It lived out there for a little over 10 years.
Feel free to call at any time.
