My electric step has experienced a couple of problems and will refuse to retract (in my first 2 weeks of ownership). This last time, it seemed to get stuck and nothing I tried to seemed to work. Was getting PM service at local shop and they checked the motor and found it had power, but only got a slight "click" when the door shut and no movement or buzz. Is it time to replace the motor? Can you get the motor only or do I need to purchase the kit that includes motor and step? Will minimal skills suffice for this project?

The Kwikee step motor is a Ford window motor. Search the site.

However, there are several things to check.

Good ground?

Clean connector down there?

Disconnect the motor leads and apply 12 volts from a known good battery with good wires. Reverse the polarity and see what happens.

Make sure the step is not bent and is well-lubed.

Properly set up and lubed, they should work very easily. Mine operates with flashlight batteries powering it.

Jer711,

The motor for my step was a left front power window motor for a 1995 Ford Taurus. Went to OReilly's and physically matched it. I replaced the motor but the step was still bent and doesn't work well. I ordered a new step and it should be here anyday now. If you'd like the old step (with the new motor and other parts) you are welcome to it. I live in southern Okla only about 2 hours away....or I can mail it to you for postage.

What kind of coach do you have? I have a 1984 Regal Royale 35'.

This has been written before, but I can't find it so here goes.

The ford window motor drives a nylon gear. If you open the gear box you will find the gear and three nylon puks. All you will need to do is replace the puks. This can be made out of 1/2" nylon rod.
