have original VDO electric speedo which I believe is a magnetic impulse sending unit model...problem is the mechanical readout odometer works off and on an is not consistant..mph needle works as it should. Where do I start troubleshooting?

check the ground on back of the alternator then on back of the gauge not much more to the vdo in our coach.
