Downside of using Rain-X?.....
I've got an opportunity to pick-up a lifetime's supply of Rain-X for a pitance....I've never used it in the past 'cause of something I read years ago, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was.......

I "think" it may have something to do with Rain-X type products interfering with any potential epoxy-based chip repairs that may be needed on the glass, but that could also be my imagination working in overtime.....

So, IS there a downside to Rain-X use?

I have used it for years and years. You can do about the same by rubbing potato juice on the windshield. We did that for years on our formula helmets. Rain-X has always performed well for me, and I know of no problems. It is possible that vapors from same can fall onto paint and cause future painting problems. I know that some tire treatements will send vapors onto a tile or smooth floor causing a very slick condition. I am sure someone will have more info on this. DASH DA-le & SH-aron

I used Rain-X on my windshield on my airplane. The windshield is made of plastic and it caused me a little problem. I used it on my old Ford truck with no problems.

I use it on my satellite dish to keep the ice and wet snow from sticking. It works sometimes, but has not made it any faster.

Dale,

I don't care what you say, I'm not combining names. "Bilge" just doesn't cut it.

That's the only downside I know of....doesn't work under 40mph...
Does that mean I have to go by MALE?

Rain-X is great stuff. I started using on my boat windshield. The side w/o the wiper was usually good enough to see other boats and buoys, at slower speeds.
On my van, I noticed a slight shimmery circle around the headlights of oncoming cars at night. Not enough shimmer to ruin vision but roadway was clearer before oncoming car's lights. Cleaned my windshield to be sure road film was not cause of shimmer. Anybody notice same thing?
