86 Regal HVAC blower motor replacement
On the way back from Hillsborough in Dec, we left Georgia with 58 degrees in the morning. (Ah, the memories...) By that evening we arrived SE Mi with 6 degrees. Not to mention, the heater blower started making a lot of noise and finally seized. Great, no dash heater. Thank goodness for propane heaters...

Anyway, in spite of the wonderful weather I wanted to get the motor replaced before I do any more cold driving and make my escape back to Florida. I had visions of standing on my head under the panel, etc. to get to the blower. (It's about 15 degrees today, too.)

Not a bad job at all, as it turns out. It is located right in front of the compartment in the right side of the dash.

First remove a few screws from top and bottom edge of the compartment box. Loosen around the sides and it will slide (reluctantly) out.

Behind you will see the HVAC plenum and the blower motor.

Remove the wires (power and ground) and the screws around the edges and you can remove the blower assembly.

The fan is attached to the motor with a nut on the shaft.

You can replace the motor with or without the fan. I removed the fan and found the motor was marked UMI6-406 underneath the fan. I was not able to find a direct match to that number but I found a replacement motor with fan at Summit, which is shown as the one for the P30s from '78 into the 90's. Around $33.

Very easy job so far. About 1/2 hour to get the old one out, should be about 10 minutes going in. For once I get a break.

We discussed this before in terms of Breakaways. Looks like the same fan. I found one at local chain store. You had much larger opening to work through. BRkW has small opening behind a vinyl map pocket.

I've had mine out a couple times on my Aristocrat (Newer name replacement for the Breakaway) Even with the map pocket access it is an easy in and out. It needs to be replaced. I have been waiting until I got the rest of the heat working correctly. Have a replacement in my shopping cart somewhere. Just replaced the one in my 98 S10 and I had to take 1/8 of the engine compartment out.

Steve glad you get to escape. Wish I could too. Someday. DBarth is in a snowbank sleeping. Just keeps being so darned cold and snowing. Ice fishing tomorrow. Lynn wants some crappies.

I know Rusty your working on your Tan. deadhorse I'm envious. Have fun at Nick and Donna's 50 celebration.

I thought you had posted on this. I think you got a better price too. Thumbs Up

(That reminds me, when I quote any source, take that as a reference/ballpark number, not an endorsement. I'm often too lazy to spend much time browsing around for the rock bottom price.) I'm sure I could get the motor alone for about $20 if I chased around for it. I got fan and all to be sure it has no cracks and is balanced.

I figured the pictures might add a bit more info, I probably should have posted them on the other thread... mechanic

Indeed, the photo sequence is GREAT, Steve.
I think the motor comes only as a fan assembly.
