Jim and TereTransmission fluid changing
Allison says that you should change the transmission fluid in a 542 every 25000 miles. My Breakaway hasn't had it's tran fluid changed for 40000 miles. Do you just drop the transmission pan and let it come out? Where is the filter? I've found one in-line filter so I know about that one. In the house battery compartment is a large canister that I think is the transmission fluid and maybe a filter in there. Is this a DIY project? Is it best to have it flushed by a shop that has that equipment, to make sure all the old fluid is replaced?
Thanks
Jim

Gary CarterThe canister in the battery compartment is for power steering.
To change the transmission fluid you have to drop the pan. On ours there was an inline filter also. There is no way that I know of to drain the torque converter.
Replace with syntec.

Gosh, that thing is 6" in dia and over 10" high. Seems awful big for a power steering canister. Where do you fill the ATF for the transmission? Stupid questions, I know. Just on a steep learning curve. Back and knee bad now so can't do much of anything except ask dumb questions.

Terry GilbertThe steering canister is also the reservoir
On mine the aux transmission filter is on the right side between the transmission and the axle. There is a filter in the pan also.

Terry GilbertFor clarifacation, the steering canister has nothing to do with the transmission. The steering fluid is sometimes automatic transmission fluid but it is NOT connected to the transmission. The canister does have a small filter in it. I used power steering fluid from NAPA when I changed mine.
My spin on transmission filter is actually on the left(drivers side) not the right.
