DRIVE BELTS
Hi Guys, On my 1976 I removed the condencer
and mis hoses from my air conditioning unit, now I'm using the compressor just for idler adjustment for the crank, power steering, a/c, and water pump. I have a Chevrolet Motor Home Chassis Service Guide 1988 which shows the drive belt routing for optional air condition system, which shows only using one belt to drive the power steering pump, the outer groove on the power steering just drives an air pump . I don't have an air pump. Could I get by safely just using one drive belt for the power steering?

Thanks Much Ralph

Ralph,

The "wrap", or arc of contact, has much to do with how much load a single belt will be able to transfer. If your new belt routings change the wrap significantly, a single belt may be overloaded.......

A good primer on this subject is at:

Two belts driving the ps pump is better than one if one fails. On larger P30s, the ps pump also operates the power brakes.

Thanks much for the quick response. My 76 power steering also powers the Hydro-Boost for the brakes. If someone out there has removed the airconditioning compressor and still uses two belts to drive the power steering pump, let me know, sure would give me lots of room over the engine.

Thank Ralph

Ralph, Lee had his shop doing it a year ago. Let's hope he will post details or pictures.
