Allison 545R - Retard Transmission
Hi - Does anyone have experience with the Allison 545R - Retarder Transmission. My '92 Breakaway 30
is equipped with this trans.& I'm not sure it's working properly. When going down hill, I can switch it on & it seems I brake less. But I have just had it inspected & was told the exhaust brake has been removed. I'm told the 2 work together. I'm new to the coach, so still learning.

Ric, I inferred that Dr. Yale went with the hydraulic retarder for better deceleration (towing) than with a Pak brake or Jake brake on the exhaust. The exhaust brake was probably removed when the 545R was installed. These links might help:
