The Old Man and No Barth
posted Hide Post
Re: Port vs. Starboard. Accountants tell the story of a revered Controller in a succesful major corporation who, every morning whan he arrived, unlocked his top desk drawer and gazed into it with total concentration for long moments before he started work. This behavior was an item of curiosity in the Financial Management office for many years.

Finally rhe old man died. After a respectful delay, the staff broke into his desk, and there, taped to the bottom of the drawer, was a beautiful hand lettered placard with the words, "Remember. The debit column is the column next to the window."

Thread drift?

Bill. the plug extension has been recommended to me before, but I haven't tried it yet. You taught this old dirt biker something new with the wire gapping though. When my SC500 Yamaha fouled a plug it was dead in the mud till you put in a new plug. My R5 350 street bike was a little more forgiving, but I never slung a leg over either of these rockets without a new plug in reserve. Wonder where they are now?

R5, huh? They were sweet bikes.
I road raced an R5 in the 70's for a while. Put Norton dampers in the forks, Ceriani springs, Matched Girling shocks in back, bronze swingarm bushings and beefed swingarm, no armature on crank, total loss ignition, premix, raised, ported and shaved barrels, bigger carbs, planed head etc. I used the Bosch blue coils, so I didn't do the plug thing as often. A bit beyond production class rules, but boy did it haul. I sold it to my friend who was lighter and perhaps a better rider, so it went on to greater success.

I loved it so much that I replaced it with a 1980 RD350LC that I had to smuggle in from Canada (not sold here). Still have it and love it. Fork is a little flexy, though. It rides like a magic carpet compared to the R5.

The way I learned it so many years ago, was Port and Left both have four letters. Way too simple, but it still works!
