Cummins 5.9L HP upgrade question
I know it's here somewhere, but someone refresh my memory. What is the most feasible (and cost effective) way to upgrade the 190HP turbo version of this engine? Seems I recall reading a turbo upgrade was The Thing and runs in the $3500 range??

Hi Ron, how are thing in Huntsville, you ran into my brother in law, Dan Whyte down there. He works for the Army. Says he can't tell me what he does or he would have to kill me.

Think info I think you are looking for is the stinger from Banks Power. www.bankspower.com This can be used from 1993 and later because Up untill 1993 or so these engines had a Bosch rotary injector pump and was not upgradable. A couple years later they changed to a Bosch Inline injector pump which was upgradable.

I would like to hear from somebody with actual experience with the 5.9 Banks upgrade. How much did you spend, which upgrade did you choose, was it worth it, power increase noticeable by how much, who installed it, problems, any improvement going up hills, etc. Again, I want to hear from someone that personally had this done. Thanks in advance!

This would be on a 1991 engine I assume because the coach in question is a 1992. Thanks Dave. No, I haven't met your BiL yet. If I do, I'll be sure and avoid any questions of his occupation. :-) My brother works for the Navy and says the same about his stuff.

I've had BANKS-equipped Diesels, and it is a fantastic improvement. For the CUMMINS, though, you have to make sure it's the right model... your "93" coach may have been built on a late 92 chassis, so check first. The BANKS engineers will help you ID your engine. There is a way to help earier engines, but it's not as dramatic an improvement...

Any BANKS kit is WELL worth it, increasing power and torque dramatically, while improving fuel mileage, too. It's like night and day... BANKS makes a first-class, well engineered product. I highly recommend it... as many think that the Breakaways with the CUMMINS seem a bit underpowered. Your acceleration will be dramatically improved, hill climbing, on-ramps... you name it. It will feel like a different machine. Go on the BANKS website that Dave mentioned, above. In my experience the BANKS data is CONSERVATIVE!

Will it pay for itself? Well, like anything Diesel, that's a tough question... probably not, but I often saw a 10% improvement in mileage.

GOOD LUCK!
