Allison Shifter Pad/ECU Problem?
I know nothing about Allison MD-3060 6 speed but I do know a lot about control modules and electronic circuit boards in automobiles. I bet you have a faulty cold solder joint on the circuit board in the ECU. Heating the board up expands metal and may solve the problem for now but like most things, eventually, one day that will not work. I would open it up and with a magnifying glass inspect all the cold solder joints for cracks. Look particularly around were the connectors connect to the board. Use a good quality controllable heat soldering iron and just go over all the solder joints and heat them just enough to melt solder.

Hi Dana, I certainly agree with Niel T. the heater strip may solve the problem for now but later it will fail completely. Problem is you will have no control when it fails.

I would do a bit more trouble shooting.

1st, heat only the Key pad, time the length of time it takes for the trans to respond.

If that does not get it to work then

2nd, heat the TCU, same as above, time the length of time.

At least this way you kinda know where the issue is and could send to the guy for re-solder or inspection.

You might try to jiggle the connectors a bit with out heating to see if it is an external issue. Of course that still could be a connector where it is soldered into the PCB.

I have always wondered how many actuation that keypad will take before failure! I use the keypad constantly when driving. Anytime I approach a grade, I manually shift down or select a gear that I know I can maintain a certain speed without going to full throttle. I manage the EGT that way for long climbs.

Suppressed my elation of getting it to move when cold. I hear what you guys are telling me and even before you suggested it I was thinking that I need to take it apart and see if it is a connection. I had some trepidation about pulling it apart and reconnecting it and losing it completely.

Problem is we are finally into May and it is warming up. I will have an opportunity to try it again tomorrow night. Supposed to top out at 39. Guess I could cool the parts with canned air if it warms up to get the same affect. Same principal one at a time find the culprit affected.

I finally got a chance to test drive my coach with the repaired ECU and it performed perfectly. As far as I can tell he only works on ECU's. He does a great job and his price is very good. Here is the information on who repaired it.

Now, the bad and worse news...
He tells me a remanufactured shifter panel and ECU is $3500 and if I want a "new" one, $4700. What? Hey, but the guy tells me that it includes programming it for the Barth, like that is supposed to make me feel good. So I ask how much is it to program the unit? He says $100! I tell him I just got to find my own replacement...

ED and Neil T got me thinking so I searched for options. See some of them listed above.

New Expensive $4700

Remanufactured $3500

Thank you Gary for the lead. Ted at TKT is the man! He will be hooking me up with a replacement controller and key pad later this week. Price for both, refurbished with 1 year warranty, is $1350. And that includes programming it for our Breakaway.

Now the best option provided by Lance is John and Judy Kopalek.

As Lance Stated Fixed, Fast, Professional. Talked to John on the phone briefly. Packaged up my unit well, Insured it well(New $4700) They got it late on a Friday. It was repaired packed and on its way back on Monday. Payment via Paypal $550 before sent back. 2 year warranty. Detailed instructions on the correct process to reinstall and energize.

Keypad instant response and flawless operation of my 6 speed Allison MD 3060. Total Monetary outlay shipped both ways and fixed less than $600 with a 2 year warranty and a fast turnaround. WHY do any other option if your ECU unit is less than perfectly preforming?

Another thing the "Programming" that is done at the factory remains so reprogramming is unnecessary. I know a whole bunch of our units have these Allison Units hope this helps everyone!
