Steering System repair
Without a repair manual, we are attempting to fix a problem in our steering system. We have a new master cylinder and have replaced the steering pump but something is causing the seal on the pump to blow. This is actually our 3rd pump. The steering gear box has also been replaced. 1988 P30 chassis, 454 GM engine.

any ideas?

Once when I was called in to fix something that had identical symptoms I found a plastic shipping cap had migrated into the new master cylinder and blocked the flow of the oil.

Was this new pump actually a rebuilt unit? Where is this seal located - what does it seal? A "blown seal" is very uncommon on a new unit. Too much fluid pressure (blown seal) is probably caused by fluid being unable to pass through the gearbox. I'd check the gearbox first, even though it is new. The fluid inlet/outlet lines weren't crossed (put in each other's place) when installing the new units? (Frustrating, isn't it?)
