Detroit Diesel Engines
Can anyone give me some background and opinion on what is called the "8.2 liter Detroit Diesel Engine"? I've talked to Detroit Diesel and they said it was an engine they made before Penske bought Detroit Diesel. When Penske bought them, GM took all the stuff related to the 8.2 with them. The local Detroit Diesel shop said they work on a few each year and while they're a little harder to work on, they're not a real problem. What models did Barth use them in? Is the non-turbo the 190 HP engine and the turbo the 230hp? Aren't they usually coupled to a 4-speed Allison? What about longevity? All I know is they are a 4-stroke V-8 and probably a little weak for anything over 15000 pounds. Thanks!

My local repair shop took me out back to a pile of 8.2s that they had replaced with 3208 cat's. These were in dump trucks and school bus's but they convinced me not to buy a coach with a 8.2 in it. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I drove it and it was the non turbo 190hp version. Quick off the line and with the electronic Allison 4-speed, absolutely gutless over 30mph. Anyway, it was a Beaver. I only drove it to see what an 8.2 was like. Now I know even more.

Oddly enough, my 6.5L TD (with only about 5"-6" boost) is rated at 190 HP!

It would be interesting to compare torque figures.
