You can replace just the ring gear, heat the gear ring, drive off the fly, heat the new one place it on the fly and let it cool.

If the coach has an auto tranny, it has a flex plate instead of a flywheel.

I am not sure the ring gear can be removed from a flex plate.

The new flex plate arrived today,, looks good. Only $31, and I had a coupon for $5 off of that. Thx Auto Zone.

The old part and the new part, both have the ring gear spot welded (12)to the flex plate.

Fingers crossed, Everything went back together nicely. Replaced the starter and flex plate. Took it on the road, my first time with this Barth or any other motorhome. It rode nice, but have an annoying exhaust leak. Had to replace a flat gasket with a donut. Now I've noticed a leak in the collector part of the header ..... life goes on.

I have heard the new starter miss a tooth or something, one time, the last time I started it. If I hear it again, I will be questioning if the newer style, smaller starter, is up to the job on this old beast.

My 502 with 9:1 compression and a lot of initial advance starts great with a Delco mini starter.

The rumpety-rump 502 in my boat also started fine with a Delco mini starter. I removed it only to change to a reverse-rotation starter mounted way up out of the bilge.
