olroys' pan-of-water-and-candy thermometers is the way I test.
Anyway, the issue was indeed not the cooling system at all - one of the joints in the exhaust from the turbo partially let go, and some of the hot exhaust gas was being pushed through the radiator. This likely happened in OH, where I got stuck in the field at my friends' house, and the muffler must've dragged on the ground.
Anyway, since I had to take things apart to reattach the joint, I used the opportunity to upgrade the elbow into the muffler with a mandrel-bent one for better flow.
Road tested today 15 miles, and all is back to normal.
