just tell me I'm not the first to do this...
When I bought my regency, the seller said I would need to replace the 2 crank batts, but the 4 coach (6V) batteries were fine. So I removed the 2 huge crank batts and took them to napa. Upon unloading, I saw a sticker for 3/08 on one of them! sure enough, napa said both were fine. So I brought them back and reinstalled. Tho I was sure I had memorized wires to post, I'm not positive I've put humpty back as he should be.(coach lights are not on and I didn't want to try to start the coach) Is there a diagram among my books? Or could someone point me to something that will verify the connections? (I'm embarrassed; tell me I'm not the first to not take a picture before I started disconnecting...)

Use a volt ohm meter, VOM, and determine which cable goes to ground. Someone correct me if I am wrong but...ground will be negative after 1954 for almost every application. The crank batts if 12V will be in parallel for 12V and series for 24V. Parallel positive to positive, series neg to pos. I am not sure if the engine is 24 but I doubt it, I know some diesel marine applications are 32V but am not aware of 24V.
Sorry I didn't get there first, congratulations on the coach.

Using a meter to find a ground could lead you astray. A meter can often detect a load to ground and read continuity, making some folks think it is going straight to ground. With battery cables, it is best to see with your eyes and feel with your hands which cables are ground.

Then, be sure they are black and the others are marked red to prevent mistakes.

What number are your crank batteries? How many caps are on each one?

Bill, thanks, I overlooked mentioning the cables should not be connected when looking for ground this way. head bang

If you have top post batteries, usually the negative is smaller in diameter than the positive. By studying the posts and the connectors, the proper configuration may quickly reveal itself.

You should also try to follow the cables to ground to verify negative. Typically in a bus they are not going to run it very far to ground, making the job easier.

The question of 12V or 24V on the starter is important in how the two batteries are wired. Are you confident of which it is? I'm betting 12V.

Thanks again for all the help; I knew the pos and neg and was almost right in my rehookup (doesn't count, does it) I finally figured out I had one wrong; got it right, and I'm back on the road again.
