Jack FinnSEIZED AC COMPRESSOR FORD 460.
hope the capital's don't annoy someone
THIS MUST HAVE HAPPENDED TO THE GROUPE 500 TIMES SO FAR..
    SEIZED AC COMPRESSOR AND PULLEY
HAD TO HAPPEN SOMEDAY , WELL IT HAPPENED.
1990 BARTH REGAL OSHKOSH CHASSIE FORD 460 ENGINE
THE AC COMPRESSOR LOCKED UP, IT WAS WORKING 2 WEEKS AGO
SEIZED TODAY.
it looks like one has to take the radiator , condenser , oil cooler
etc etc etc and take this out the front . ....is that correct ??.
has anyone tried to just replace the pulley and clutch assembly without doing all the above.  ??
has anyone taken the front 12 inches of the 'dog house" to get at this from the top??    how big a job is that??
was it designed to come out ???
has anyone tried to by pass the ac and run a belt without the ac ??? is there clearance..    belt size????

billyt53Good morning Jack, the only time I have ever stripped down the front on an Oshkosh with a 460 was to replace a failed camshaft. If the AC compressor is at the top, unfortunately you will have to work by feel but it can be done. I have forgotten the bracket configuration, it’s just been too long.
You should be able to find a replacement on acparts.com or apair.com.
Assuming the compressor is seized and not the clutch, you need to flush the system, convert it to R134a and replace the expansion valve or H-block and receiver dryer.
Good luck

Steve VWThere is a John Deere chassis service manual available to download. 89 version I think. (Large file, I was not able to upload to this site.) The link is still working.
Here:
https://www.cdr-roc.com/89JD/89-JD-Chassis-manual.pdfThere is a belt diagram shown. This one is for carbureted engines. If it is correct, it looks like the AC belt drives only the AC. Can be run without belt for now?
