Synthetic tranny fluid
The Barth is due for a tranny fluid change this spring. With 140k on the Allison 6-speed, it it worth it to go to synthetic tranny fluid?

When I changed the rear main seal, I replaced the tranny fluid with Allison's Transynd. Noticed a difference in shifting--more crisp--and it pulled better in 4th gear.

Transmissions are one application where synthetic is worthwhile.

I discourage the shop-flush method, as it can dislodge stuff. My local tranny guru also declines to do it. Generally, it's unnecessary to do the drive-flush-drive-flush routine, but as my NJ neighbor Mrs. Goldberg would say, "It can't hoit."

One of the things we discovered was that there is a lot of tranny fluid in the torque converter. The Allison book says my transmission holds 9 quarts. But between the transmission cooler, lines and torque converter, an additional 7 quarts was required to fill it up. Yep, I was there. 4 gallons and that brought it to just the bottom of the 'cold' setting on the dip stick.

Allison's service recommendations are 2 years/50,000 miles using Dexron and 4 years/150,000 miles using TranSynd or ANY OTHER TES 295 Synthetic Transmission Fluid. We are on our third rotation of TranSynd.
