I use Dexron III in my 4L80E; when I had the tranny uprated, the shop said synthetic was unnecessary unless the temp ran high. It runs at around 145°F and hits around 200° on very long grades. Normal base stocks can handle those indefinitely.

I do have a Mag-Hytec pan that increases capacity by ~4 qts., and is engineered to provide additional cooling. This is probably unnecessary with the ability to add external cooling with the TH400; however, the non-lockup TC generates more heat...

I consider a temp gage essential.
