chrisWDetroit Diesel 8.2 T Question
Acn anyone tell me the shift points (RPM) for their 8.2T? mine seems to be way low (2000 rpm) and I have adjusted the governer but that has not made much of a difference.
The engine is rated to 3200 RPM but I was wondering if Barth set this low for a reason...

MWrenchWhat transmission do you have? When you adjusted the governor, was this the transmission governor?

Gary CarterThe maximum shift point of the 545 is built into the transmission at the factory. BUT there is a throtle position sensor that goes from the throtle to the transmission. At full depression the shift points will be as defined in the build. At partial depression the shift points will be at a lower RPM. So it could be that a full depression the throttle position thinks it is a partial depression.

chrisWso it really sounds like it has been set up to only run to 2000 rpm....seems kind of odd to me. Any other detroit diesel 8.2T owners out there?

Deb&Eds38Chris:
We have an 8.2 in our 1982 35'Regency with a 4 speed Allison. It's not a hill climber but we haven't found one that has stopped us yet. I usually run around 2750 to 2900 at about 62-63 mph. It's shifting range depends on the grade and how hard I put my foot into it but it's usually going into 4th around 2100 to 2200.
I as most of us with the older ones do, have some grounding problems so I can't be sure if the rpm and speed are dead on. I use a GPS most of the time to accurately read my speed.
The motor had about 2000 miles on it when I bought the coach and the sticker says Factory rebuilt. I think the transmission was gone over then also.
We bought it off a dealer a a fair price and have have enjoyed it for the last 6 years.
Good Luck

Gunner "I usually run around 2750 to 2900 at about 62-63 mph." I have never run my Cummins 8.2L over about 2300 RPM, and that only in rare times for short periods. I thought since it is "a diesel" max RPM should be 2200-2400 RPM. How wrong am I? (I cruise 70 mph at 1900 RPM).

Nick CagleGunner, I think you might be comparing apples and oranges. The old Jimmy or Detroit Diesels were a whole different situation. Much higher operating RPM than Cat or Cummins.

Gary CarterThe 71 and 92 series Detroit Diesels actually liked 1600-1800 for best economy. These were two stroke engines. The 8.2T is a medium duty four stroke engine used mostly in local delivery and school buses.

RustyWhile not a derivative of the 8.2L, the 6.5TD is yellow lined at 3500 and red banded at 4000 to 5000. I cruise at about 62 mph at 2600 RPM.
