Rear view camera operation
I have replaced the old Sony BW camera with a new all in one AV touch screen stereo. The new unit comes with a back up camera but it wants to be connected to the back up lights to work and to the parking brake to use the DVD. My coach has no parking brake (only air), and I want to use this as a rear view since the back is solid and I tow a trailer. Has anyone figured out a way to allow selection of the camera without having to be in reverse? (I also have no shifter - just a toggle switch to the Allison tranny)

Just put 12vdc on the backup line to make it hot all the time. Same for the DVD line. All should then work.

Whoa... Hang on there.

Running a 12 volt power (12v +) to the emergency brake may not be a good idea. Most emergency brakes operate off of a ground switch. Supplying 12v + might cause an issue.

Running a 12v + to the reverse is probably a safe bet.

Could you scan the wiring diagram for me and send it to my email? I'll draw something out for you and then post it here for all to comment on. For now, do not run 12v + to any circuit.

I have a camera on the back of my PU,it is wire less X-mission from the camera to the receiver. Instructions called for wiring it to the back-up circuit but I also wanted to keep man eye on my trailer so I wired it to the parking lites. I don't want to run a separate wire to a separate switch up front. Now I turn the lites on to view aft.

STOP! REREAD my responce. I did not say run 12vdc to the backup lights or to the parking brakes, but to the wiring on the NEW rear view camera to keep it active.

Hey Gary, all is good. You may be right. But I want to err on the side of caution.

Tom is asking how to wire up his video monitor. The head unit that he is asking about should have extra wires that need to get hooked up for monitor activation.

Because driving down the road while looking at a TV screen would cause an issue to the driver, the DVD players are made to be active when the parking aka emergency brakes are applied. Of course, if you're a back seat passenger this isn't an issue.

When describing how to hook up to the emergency brake it appears to me that he would probably need to ground out the parking brake feed wire to activate the DVD player part. I took your above statement to mean he should apply 12v + to that wiring circuit in the head unit.

If in fact his head unit is as I described, hooking up 12v + to that circuit could cause an issue with the DVD player part.

While I do agree that the exciter for the transmission is probably a 12v + wire, I would still like to see the wiring diagram for the head unit before I make a recommendation.

I will sketch the wiring diagram - I do not have a full schematic. The unit is a Pioneer AVH P4000-DVD (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Source/AV-Receivers/AVH-P6000DVD) but the transmission (Allison 3 speed) uses ground to shift - no hot wire on the dash toggle. I was hoping to avoid another switch and set it up so that I could select camera from the on screen menu and use it as a rear view mirror of sorts and still be able to watch the DVD when the ignition is in run or accessory. I am not so interested in a direct full time power connection because the parasitic draw from the unit would run down batteries over a week or two when parked.
