Acquired a barn find 22 foot Barth. Some information shows these to have a 454 but mine is a 350. Did they come with a 350?

Welcome to the site! There is a lot of variation among the Barth coaches so nothing is impossible.

The shorter coaches often had 350 engines. Those 28ft and longer have 454 engines.

Good luck with your coach. Thumbs Up

Found this unit and has been sitting in a shed since 1992 and still in great shape. Looking to get this it back on the road. Mine is all silver with no paint as I see in most pictures. Are there any sources for manuals for these? Any information I can get on it would be great.

Welcome Gary

You are not far away. You’ll have to plan to hit our GTG. My 72 is my deer camp and has no motor or tranny but is pullable as a toad. That’s how I got it to camp.

I had salvaged some parts for others but nobody wanted so I scraped them last time I sold metal. I may have kept some papers I’ll look around. They maybe in the coach 469 miles away.

I do have one priceless item you will want. I have the passenger side windshield glass. I saved it for someone to use if needed. The drivers side broke upon removal sadly.

Post you data tag info and we can tell you a bit more about your find.

Welcome again

Barth started building motorhomes in late 1969. From then until about October 1972 they used a smaller windshield than the later models. (Guardian 4788-ID and 4789-DD) Later models used DW-730 and DW-731 windshields which are still available. They were OEM for 80's GMC cabover trucks. If you have a late 72 model you may have the larger common ones. Check your glass numbers.

The early smaller windshields are very rare. Treat them with extreme care. Not stocked by any supplier. Worse yet we have not been able to determine what the OEM application was for salvage sources. We have Guardian #s for both sides but even Guardian has not been able to give us any info except that they are obsolete. I tracked down a set a while ago and those were the last ones we have found. see here:

As for manuals, there is little info here on the site for the early models. That said, the driveline is very similar to the heavy duty GM pickup trucks of that year.

For chassis info you can look for P32 or P37 GM chassis. The lower GVWR units were similar to the P30 type breadtruck chassis, the P32 series had higher GVWR. The chassis used specifically for the longer motorhomes was the P37.

Here is the GM VIN decoder:

Good luck with your coach! Mechanic

The decoder works mostly. My engine number shows as E and plant shows as J. Looks like manufacturing date is March 72. Windshield shows guardian 788 9M for passenger side.

Tag number is CPE372J114417. It has a propane carb that I'm not sure is stock or conversion.

Does it have a Barth build number on the tag? Something like: 72xx-1234-MCx ?

Interesting. Considering you have an E for the engine code that might be a factory propane unit. Some of the earlier VIN codes indicate E as simply "V8 engine".

It should be easily convertable to a gas carb but it may have a different compression ratio and or timing. The propane engines sometimes have a higher compression ratio than the gasoline ones...
