Rusty spent a week at my house here in NY. As an avid stargazer he'd make an annual drive out to a Suffern NY College and help a friend who had a booth set up there and we'd get together then too.

I'll miss you Rusty. Rest in peace my friend. I'll have a "Makers Mark" with you Danny.

I noticed that Rusty's last post on Barthmobile was just a few days ago, March 4th. A trooper 'till the end. And please remember:

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.

All is well.

Jim

Rusty entered the Navy three months ahead of me, at the one great institution I had tried and failed to achieve - the United States Naval Academy. He was in the Class of 1964 and distinguished himself as much as the future Admirals, POW's, Astronauts, Generals and public servants that that class produced. Malcolm Shermer, "Rusty" Keeney now joins his fallen brothers and pure patriots who served through three wars and countless national events. I met and shared sea stories with him on three occasions, all Barth related, and our shared love of our dogs. I believe he is eligible to be buried at Annapolis along side former shipmates and if so I hope his family finds a way to accomplish that. I know he would have wanted such. So, for now, until we meet again, - May you have fair winds and following seas- God Bless

I will miss Rusty. When we showed up in the middle of the night at GTGs he was always the one still up. We spent a good bit of time in the chat here talking about stuff til the wee hours of the morning. I was supposed to make him some Barth shirts to replace some thrown out by a contractor. He said no rush just get to them when you can. I wish now I had made that more of a priority. Rusty was a solid dude. I always enjoyed our talks and had a great deal of respect for him.

Rusty was the first Barth Owner I met when he came through here for a star party. We took him out for dinner and he invited Anne and I out for a star party the next day. First one we have ever been to. We really enjoyed the party.

Rest In Peace my friend.

.........if only these praises could have been lauded upon him a month ago! My mother used to say, "give me flowers now so that I can enjoy them; don't waste them on my grave."

I want to thank everyone for the kind comments. I'm sure Rusty would say the same. I would like to suggest that we name the June Milford GTG The Rusty Keeney Memorial GTG. We can set around toast the old sailor and tell "Rusty" stories over margaritas, his favorite cocktail. Maybe we can even get Stinkydaddy to do us a memorial t-shirt. What do the rest of the members think of the idea.
