Barth Data Tag Information - help wanted

I have a 1984 35ft MCC Regency Detroit D. Pusher.

# are: 8405-0040-35RDB
Date of manufacture: 05 84
Vin 1RP1A5866E1US1072
Regency Prod. Inc.

If understand the forum this would be the 40th coach built, (for the year, or for the modle?).

Jeff, all the info so far would indicate that you own the 40th Regency built.

I'm getting confused here................... Did they include trailers in the sequence numbering but start over at 0 for Regencies? Did they start over for other models, as well?

Bill, From the Tags gathered so far that looks exactly like what they did. I have one series of tags that includes all models except Regency and Monarch. I have tags for coaches, trailers, and commercial units that all line up in sequence. The Regencies started over at number one, and the Monarchs started over at M0001. My question is why did they do that for two lines of the Pushers but not the Breakaway. I don't have a clue but the Breakaways are included in the tags with all the others. Hope this doesn't confuse us all further. The more tags we can gather the better we will understand.

If anyone uses Excel, I'll be happy to email you the worksheet that I'm compiling.

Here is what I've got, on the P30-something chassis, for what I am told is a 1987 Model year Barth with a 454 from Chevrolet.

I'll bet the number 5 is really the letter S - Single axle
The 25... that'll be a tough one. My commercial coach says 12 at the end and I don't know what it means.

When was the last Regal built? The last data tag I have for a Regal is 8910-3636. Bill N.Y is 9102-3709 but it was originally a commercial unit. All the tag numbers after that are Breakaways, Regencies, and Monarchs.

Please keep the tags coming.

I believe Allan has a 97 Regal on a 96 chassis that he bought new.

I have tried to analyze the data tags gathered so far to determine my best guess at the number of Barths. We do not have enough to make absolute conclusions but here is what I have. Between August, 1974 and March, 1979 Barth produced 1051 units. An average of 19 units per month or 230 per year. Between March, 1979 and May, 1984 production was 473 units. An average of 7.5 per month or 90 per year. Between May, 1984 and January, 1987 production picked back up to a total of 304 units, 9.5 per month and 114 per year. From January 1987 to May, 1993 (the last tag I have for a unit other than Regency and Monarch) Barth produced 473 units or about 6.5 per month and 75 per year. These are all units other than Regency and Monarch.

Regency tags go from unit number 40 in May, 1984 to unit 164 in November, 1992. That is a total of 125 Regency coaches in a period of 105 months or about 14 per year.

The info so far indicates early Regencies on MCC chassis were powered by DD, later Regencies on Gillig chassis were powered by CAT and Spartan chassis by Cummins. Wonder if this relationship holds up?

When we first inquired of Barth (at the factory,with our '86 present for a preliminary trade-in discussion) re a new coach in 1995, they essentially said "We have Spartan chassis w/Cummins 8.3 in stock but we'll build on Gillig with Cat or any chassis/engine combination you want". 400 Cummins were a "special order" but they seemed to be pushing that engine. They did have 6 to 10 Spartan MM chassis on the lot, and at that time were attempting to set up dealerships, including Canada, and were building Monarchs as spec or showroom units for the dealers.

Maybe the norm was gillig/cat or spartan/cummins or you had to special order the chassis/engine combination.
