Rivet Tool
Does anyone have a rivet tool I could rent, borrow, buy, that would accept 1/4" closed end aluminum rivets? (POP Rivets) All the running lights on my Regal were installed using 1/4" POP rivets and the normal rivet tools available only go up to 3/16" rivets. 1/4" rivets won't work in them. I found a tool at Hanson Rivet but it's $110 and that's a little much for 20 rivets. As far as I know, they're the only 1/4" rivets on the whole thing.

For non-structural applications, I have cut a 1/4 rivet to just the grip length, and used it as a bushing for a 3/16 rivet. Since you can't get behind for a backer washer, use a long rivet so the upset is large enough to pull it tight. Do just one to see if it works, first.

What diameter is the stem on your 1/4 inch rivets?

Bill, don't know what dia the mandrel of the 1/4" rivet is but Hanson said it was bigger than the mandrel of a 3/16" and that a normal tool wouldn't work. For that reason, I haven't bought the 1/4" rivets yet.

When I need a 1/4 rivet pulled, I go to the hangar, but if I had to buy a tool, I would buy the Astro 1426.

They also have a 5 3/4 extension.

When Homeland Security finally realizes I am retired and no longer lets my Barth in the hangar parking lot, I will probably buy one of these. Or when I need one to keep at home.

When I move my ladder, it will be fastened to the roof with quarter-inchers. There is a little too much flexibility there, which can stress the sealant and invite leaks. I have also tied the ladder to the railing up there to spread the stress around. Of course, if you stay off the roof, this is a non-issue. I tilt the solar panels in the winter, and change the vent lids from clear to tinted and back with the seasons.

Robert and Kimberly--thanks for the offer. I checked on the RHT 300 and it will only work on rivets up to 3/16" dia. So far, Bill H with the Astro 1426 is the only possibility.
Thanks

THIS looks quite a lot like the Astro tool, at a much lower cost. What is this world coming to when a Chinese product is copied by another Chinese factory and sold for less?

I did find a tool that will handle 1/4" rivets. If anyone wants to borrow it, just let me know. It works very well.
