We have towed our '96 4wd Explorer for the past 7 years, now going to say good-bye to the Explorer.
We have a 2003 Ford 150 Super Crew FX4. Can't find whether or not it's towable but my hunch is not without installing the after market neutral tow mechanism and maybe, because it's 4wd shift on the fly, it can't be done at all. So, if not, what vehicle would someone suggest we consider for a fun, utility kind of toad? Our Barth is a

How about an older Jeep Cherokee? You can tow a 4x4 model 4 down, you can seat 4, you can drop the back seat for more cargo area, and get around 20 miles to the gallon. At least we do with ours. Smiler

FMCA magazine and their website FMCA.com compiles a list of towable vehicles every year. You can look at prior years on the website.

I tow my 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4 5 speed manual transmission (shift on the fly) with a Roadmaster setup with no modifications just fine. The Auto model transmission with shift on the fly has an inexpensive Ford modification to make it towable.
