Great story. Our soldiers are ambassadors of goodwill and hope, and they do a far better job of it than our 'leaders'. You know the old saying, "Old men wage war and young men and women fight them". Thanks to all. We have plenty of pictures and would love to share. The picture of Josh with the Iraqi toddler made it to the New York Times and Wall St. Journal. It was also, of course, in Leatherneck. What wasn't written is the background story. If you look close, you will see he is wearing a prototype communication translator. The plastic cards at his side are the code phrases to the translator. For instance, if Josh says in English "American Soldier" the translator picks that up via voice recognition and then disseminates in Iraqi (or any of 100s of pre-programmed languages) something like "We are American Soldiers. We are not here to harm you, but if you show aggression we will use deadly force. Please reply to any questions with one finger for yes, two fingers for no." There are thousands of possible code phrases and responses. As I am in the military communications field, I got one of these expensive prototypes for Josh on his first deployment. In this photo he was accompanying the Colonel as they found the electronic interpreter far more valuable than the live "terp". It seems that in Iraq the "terp" almost always ends up arguing with the males that are confronted, often as they need to enter the subjects home for a search. The Marines are constantly trying to to figure out if the subject is stalling, aggressive, scared, etc. but there is the huge language barrier. According to Josh, when confronted with the electronic command, the subject usually either complies immediately or runs! In either case, Josh says the Marines know what to do next.
