VIN Number Check

Would like to check a VIN number to determine how many owners and mileage a particular Barth has. Other than 'CarFax', is anyone aware of a free source of this information? I've looked at several so-called 'free' checks only to find out that they are really not free. CarFax is now $39.99 for just one. Thanks
