Tom and JulieIn 1985 the choices were the Cat 3208, the DD 8.2 and Cummins. the Cummins was being developed for the pickups or the big rigs, not medium duty. The Cat was heavier and exceeded the transmisions so the DD was the best choice. Remember that Newell used DD throughout its development until they upgraded to Cummins in the late 1990's. It was the best available engine to pair with the best coaches, including Newell, Barth, Hawkins, and even the early bus conversions like Flixible, GMC and others. Nothing wrong with any of them, if you follow the directions and do the maintenance.

MoishehOur Bluebird had the Turbo intercooled 3208. 300 HP. Although it is not one of Cat's best powerplants it worked really well. Lots of power as we sometimes towed my full size Chev PU behind the Bird! We had a ZF 5 speed that was an excellent tranny. They do smoke in the morning and putting your foot into it will leave a trail of Black smoke!

Jim & BarbMoisheh,
My Barth originally had a 205hp DD and it was slow winding up from a stop. It wasn't very peppy, however we made several trips into north Georgia, North Carolina and Tn.
The 205hp DD was very heat sensitive and because of that it did get a bad rap. Mine broke a water jacket in north Florida which trashed the engine.
I must say it was unbelievable how tough the engine was because it still ran with water & oil being pumped out through every place it could and through the exhaust. It put out a thick smoke screen that must have killed off every Florida mosquito for ten miles.
Anyway after putting in the late model 230hp DD, I was very impressed at the performance change & smoothness.
We took a trip from Florida to NC to TN to Mt Home AR into the MO Ozarks to St. Louis Mo and then back to TN and down through AL and back to FL. The Barth never even got near being hot and ran fine through all those hills towing our Jeep.
Tom K. hit the nail on the head. Take care of your engine & it will take care of you.
Jim
