When I was in the Jag restoration business, we used the silicone break fluid because it didn't eat the paint.

So, on the '93 Breakaway, it says use DOT 3 only. Why is this? Is there something in DOT 4 or 5 or the synthetics that will adversely affect the rubber in the brake lines or seals in the calipers?

DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are OK for a DOT 3 vehicle. DOT 5 requires flushing before changing over. Then it will be OK.
