Steve,
Nice, I am still missing my old Westie 1977 (was chrome yellow too), kept it for 16 years, lots of good memories, sold it for over twice the price paid, almost kept it as a toad, keeping an eye on your project and maybe one day ...
(hope you put 6 ply tires on it, make a big difference for crosswind)

Every time I see this thread it reminds me of Doug, his buddy, and I taking a Westie pop-up to Michigan for deer hunting. It had the god-awful automatic, and was a fully loaded camper, but if you were going downhill and the engine stayed running, it was a pretty cool vehicle. BTW Steve, if the inside of the distributor falls apart, it will quit running.

I found a VW bus in decent condition; with a little sheetmetal work and new paint, it looks modern (still need to put on the flower and peace decals - and a Mary Jane fragrance pod):

MilSpec AMG 6.5L TD 230HP; built-to-order by Peninsular Engines: Hi-pop injectors, gear-driven camshaft, non-waste-gated, high-output turbo, 18:1 pistons. Fuel economy increased by 15-20%, power, WOW!"StaRV II"

Might want to change the front emblem (or is that the way they write VW in Japan?)

I thought they all smelled that way... a variation of the "new car smell"? ROTFLMAO

Finally getting back to this project. Mechanic
Mounted new tires, replaced the lenses and bulbs in all the running lights with LEDs. Replaced headlights, all lights working well now. Rebuilt the carb to get the idle stable, installed new air filter.

Ordered more parts: new foam cushions and seat covers for both front seats, wipers, magnetic oil drain plug.

Engine now runs OK but leaks oil from the pushrod tubes. Installed a pressure gauge to check oil pressure, it seems normal so I will just do a top end rebuild.

Removed the rear bumper and skirt, also muffler. Ready to drop the engine soon.

to be continued: Mechanic

What fun. I am looking for a diesel VW bus. They made this bus the last couple of years with a gas engine and diesel was an option. Add a turbo to diesel and you are set to go.

a turbo to diesel

Yes Gary, the VW turbo diesel was peppy little diesel. I had Turbo diesel put in a VW rabbit pickup truck. That was a perfect match.
Another VW Jetta was not a turbo, but it had a grease car kit in the car when I purchased it. Left it run anywhere I went, and folks gathered round to find out where to purchase the funnel cakes and fries. It always made the drivers behind me stop somewhere to eat.
I sill have to put the turbo diesel in my 1987 Ford. You might find a turbo diesel bus already done on eBay.
Sorry Steve VW, We know you are not a diesel nut, but a gasser nut. You will probably put a high performance Volkswagen engine in that bus with Scat heads or something.

I considered big jugs, dual carbs, etc but 1600 stocker is probably all I'll need for a toad. (I've always been fond of big jugs in the right context) ROTFLMAO

I can always hotrod later when I get the rest done. My new Barth trans will be here on Wed, after that the VW gets the wrench. Mechanic

Pertronix ignitor is a good investment. No point adjustment. Starts faster, more top end power. In a VW bus any power loss or gain is noticeable.

There is a module of some sort in the distributor already. It may not be installed correctly because the vacuum advance cannot fully turn the baseplate.

It will be inspected soon. If I don't trust what is there I will gladly take your advice with the Pertronix setup. Thanks! Thumbs Up
