I am surprised the author refers to them as "motorhomes".
They were known as "house cars".
The bar rail "bumper" on the first may have been almost as effective a bumper as one made of fiberglass on a late Barth.

They still are in California. There is even a special "housecar driver's license" for owners of motor homes longer than 40'.
