John died last week at 99. The Dobsonian Telescope got its name from John's having popularized the design. He scoffed at those who venerated him for the mount, saying, "It's only a cannon mount!"

I had the distinct pleasure a few years ago to spend a couple of hours at my 11" scope's eyepiece with John. He was gracious and entertaining, and we had a good time away from the usual crowds John dealt with.

I'm probably one of the few of John's acquaintances that know he had only one good eye...
