What to do w/sending unit?

This is our sending unit(rear tank). No problems with it. It's just pretty rusty. What might our experts suggest before reusing in tank?

Coat it with navel jelly and wash off with water after it dies its work. The spray it with carburetor cleaner and reinstall. Should be fine. Check the float in a can of fuel. If it sinks more than about 1/4 of the diameter get a replacement at the auto store. Sometimes they begin to absorb fuel or water and then they read improperly. A variety of replacement floats are sold at auto parts house.

In either case the idea is quite staggering.
