About to purchase 1975 Barth - help and advice please!
Hello Folks, thanks for getting together and building this community - without which I would have nobody to turn to for advice on the Barth which I am about to purchase. It is possibly the only thing so far lending confidence to this pursuit.

It is a basket case Barth from 1975 for $1700cdn. The current owner says he purchased it from some old folks but never got around to using it and it has been sitting on his property for "a few years." The registry check I ran shows the last time it was registered in my province was 1995. I'll Attach some photos below if it allows me.

It has a Chev 454 in it and I am told it is on a 1 ton Chev chassis. Would this be the C30 or P30? I just picked up all the parts for front and rear brakes for a P30 and am hoping for the best when I get there tomorrow(two-hour drive).

From speaking to the only person I know who Rv's the only thing that would make me run for the hills is if there was water damage and the roof was anything but aluminum. Is it safe to assume this roof will be aluminum since the rest of the body appears to be?

My plan for picking it up is as follows: Please share any advice you might have.

1) Siphon out the old gas and replace with fresh or pour Seafoam in it and let it run for a while. Seafoam [B]or[/B not?
2)Change the oil and filter
3)Replace the battery.
4)Air filter change
5) Change belts (if i have time, otherwise I'll have them with me in case one snaps on the drive)

What else should be on my radar? I know nothing of rv's/motorhomes but am fairly mechanical although my background is mostly motorcycle related.

Any good resources for how to start and test the actual home portion of the rig would be helpful.

Thanks!

Check windshield numbers. You will find many postings about early windshields. Looks like the right ones but check.

How about this Front hub and rotor combo? Can I just angle grind that or bead blast it and call it good or should I put the new ones on I purchased today? I'd rather not if they can be salvaged.

Well it is great to see you give an oldy a new life! You have to get it jacked up anyway, so give the hub a spin, listen for odd noise or grinding, I would put bearing grease in both before any move. It is a going to take some time to check everything out for a two hour trip, be patient and good luck.

It is a p30 chassis almost every part you will need is available at Rockauto.com.

I think you need to do a complete brake inspection, new plugs and wires, rotor and cap. Coolant, maybe even hoses, grease job. Obviously tires. I will be surprised if the radiator is leakproof.

Mine sat for only a few years, and I still get fuel tank debris, do not try and use those tanks without some type of a good flush. Change the filter in your Rochester for sure, take extras with you always, voice of experience speaking. I would WD40 all the cylinders, remove the valve covers and squirt oil down each pushrod and over the rocker arms. I assume the engine was not treated for storage.

Most would recommend new tanks after sitting for 25 years.

The Rochester is your Carburetor. After 25 years I might guess it is a bit gummed up also, a rebuild might be a good Idea, it is difficult now days to find a good carburetor guy though. I got a kit from Rockauto and did it myself.

My Barth also needed a new fuel pump, the diaphragm, was damaged.

Change your fuel lines too. Get gas out, maybe you got a drain plug on bottom of tank. First see if the motor is even running - not seized.

Here is a list of the things that I had to fix or replace on the engine and chassis.

Tires
master cylinder
power steering pump
front brake calipers and pads
front flex lines for the brakes
Alternator
water pump
radiator
fuel pump
Steering damper
starter

I did other stuff to help it run better, SteveVW has done more work on a P30 than anyone perhaps you can search for some of his posts or PM him he is most helpful.
