Please help!! I parked my 1991 Barth 28 motorhome, came out the next day and turned the key and no results. Tested the batteries and had 12.7 volts coming out of each battery. Nothing going forward, no click, no lights in or out, no horn nothing. Like there were no batteries in the vehicle. No problem prior to that time. Cleaned all cables and connections nothing happens. I figure it must be a tripped circuit breaker or relay to make everything go away. Am I missing a circuit breaker or relay upstream from the battery?

Not sure what chassis you have... 91 could be GM or Ford/Oshkosh, or Spartan?

Many coaches have a relay which allows the driver to connect both batt sets together (AUX START switch). Try that if you have one. Also, this relay has connections from both batt sets, possible bad connections. The relay is often on the frame near the batt boxes. From there the cable runs to the starter on the GM chassis.

GM often ran the main batt cable right to the starter lug, then ran another wire to the harness and alternator from there. Be sure the starter connections are tight or nothing gets through.

And as usual, be sure to check all ground lugs.

Put a charger on the battery, then check the operation while charging. Older batteries can show a full charge, but drop considerably when a load is applied. Also try turning on the headlights and check the voltage.

But I'm with SteveVW - I'd suspect a bad connection somewhere.

Sorry if I did not make it clear I believe I may have a Spartan Chassis and the batteries are brand net. I also believe it is a switch or main circuit breaker for everything to go off all at once. I have a large master elect panel at the end of the bed but it is mostly 110 volt. It has two solenoids but I have no idea what they go to. It would seem to be a circuit breaker type switch somewhere that breaks the battery to vehicle connection. Still looking for the switch itself. It is possible that it is a fuse of some sort, that cuts off the entire 12volt system. Thanks for all the input. Keep the knowledge flowing. If I solve this mystery it will be because of one of you. I may try to take some pictures .

Althhough my '92 Spartan chassis has a GM drivetrain, there is a panel in the battery compartment and yours may have one, too. In mine, that panel has fusible links, relays, and disconnects.

Good morning, David Cribb;

As Rusty mentioned, there may be a fusible link or some similar main wiring protection device somewhere in the wiring. At this point, having the wiring diagrams will be the best resource for determining where to start. Something like a fusible link should be shown on the wiring diagram. There should actually be two (2) wiring diagrams; one for the chassis and one for the coach. Look at the one for the chassis for this part.

Enjoy;

Had the same problem last year. The wiring does not go to the starter solenoid but to another solenoid that is mounted on the right side frame rail close to the bell housing. This then sends power to the starter mounted solenoid. I ended up running a new line to the frame rail solenoid.

On my '93 Breakaway, the solenoid that Gary refers to is
protected by an adjacent automotive spade fuse. My aging and dragging solenoid caused that fuse to pop while on the road last year. A classic road service call that involved
a $1.00 charge for the fuse and a $125.00 charge for knowing where the fuse was located. Frowner

Thanks for all of the good input I will try to work on it the first of the week and I will keep you posted. Once again I thank you all for the sharing of knowledge.
