Zinc, ZDDP, and motor oil
Hi,
Most of us with Chevrolet chassis Barths have flat tappet camshafts in the engines. It has been 8 years since "ZDDP" was mentioned in the forum.

The camshaft manufacturers are all stating that because modern motor oils have removed or cut back on zinc in the oil, that cam lobe destruction can occur. It is not a problem for roller cams.

I saw another show on the Motor Trend channel that made note of this.

Make sure you use zinc additives in your oil if you are running the old style camshaft. I had not been before, but I will always do so now in every engine I have with the flat tappet camshafts. There are additives, and there are also "racing oils" with ZDDP noted.

Happy Motoring!
Matt

Rotella oils still have zinc additives in them. Some have been reduced from previous years but all contain good additive packages.

Definitely good for flat tappet engines.
