Winegard Antenna....Keep it?

Restoring a 1974 23 footer. Starting with the roof, working my way down. Sealing all the fittings this weekend and I'll coat the roof next week. There's an old Winegard antenna on it that will need some parts to bring back to working condition...

I like the retro 'space age' look of it, but is there any good reason not to pull it off and seal up the holes as I do the rest of the roof? Would a simple HD antenna from the local electronics box store fit the bill without the leak risk and extra weight?

Thoughts?

Most parts to that antenna can be purchased. If you remove it you still have the hole in the roof inside to try to hide.
you can get a replacement also I have used the Jack antenna with good success.

My Winegard antennas both work well, not sure about the others. Parts are available as mentioned.

There is an amplifier built into the antenna itself. It requires power to operate. This is usually supplied by a module in the wall plate through the coax feed. Without the power to the amp there will be very low signal received. Be sure you have both parts.

Still seems the best solution to receive local TV stations. And you do not need any changes because of digital TV. The broadcast signal is still RF. The encoding is the digital part.

I would fix it.

I put up a new one of the same kind. The Winegard antenna has good reception. Most of the mounting holes matched up the same from new to old.
A drill, rivet gun will get the job done. A die grinder will aid you in removing the sealant neatly from the area to seal the new antenna in place.

Kevin I have found the vibratory multitool to be the best thing to remove old sealant, caulk, crud, butyl tape. If you scar the metal aluminum under at all make sure you use self etching primer before sealing to get good adhesion. I have a bunch of redoing on a new project I will have tro take pictures I'm not saying more until I have possession. Don't want any visits from the TURD Fairy.

Kevin set me up a folder. I have vowed to get more pictures. I may call you for help.

Looks like I'll keep it and try to get it functional. This will be a full restore, including replacing almost all the interior, refinishing the exterior, etc. My goal is to keep the 'spirit' of the 70's in this Barth with as much present day reliability as possible. We'll see how that goes Big Grin I'll be starting to upload pictures in the next month or so.

That is what I did with mine. It is 1979.
it has been a very long project,But well worth the effort.
