Discussed hard starting, cold “cough” on acceleration with supplier of fuel additive for our diesel trucks and Cat engines. I was told the EPA has introduced another round of sulfur removal from #2 diesel fuel (to 1%) and the consequences. Diesel fuel provides lubrication to the rings and evens out the burn cycle. Fuel is rated with a lubricity value and lack of sulfur reduces this and results in too dry fuel. I have used an additive that adds lubricity and ethane and the symptoms have disappeared while mileage has improved. There are hundreds of additives for diesel fuels and I do not want to endorse any. What I use is working for me and in our diesel Barth it is worth the money to protect the engine. Just look for lubricity additives and try one or more. Do not continue without something as the older diesels need this or problems will get more frequent and expensive.

My cocktail:

Mixture of 2 cycle oil (1 Qt./50 Gal.), Cetane Boost (80 Oz./250 Gal.), Biobor JF (1 Oz./60 Gal.)

Therefore, combined in gallon jug is 3 Qts. of 2 cycle oil, 40 Oz. of Cetane Boost, 2 ½ Oz. of Biobor JF = 1 gallon of mixture.

USAGE = 1 QT. / 40 GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL.

Additional cost of fuel <11 cents/gal.

Great recipe! Did you have issues before you did that?

No, but I've been doing this with all my diesels for probably 10 years now. When I had an injection pump rebuilt on an older pick up I was educated about the fuel then. And today it's become exasperated.

I use a gallon container with sight scale on the side, a spout is screwed on (Walmart I think) and a white cap that comes with a quart container of rear end oil. Very convenient to use. A couple additional gallons of mixture is carried along.

I have used a quart of 2 cycle oil/60 gallons for years, 306,000 miles later, well so far so good. I hadn't heard about further reduction of sulfur.

I haven't used any other additive except some occasional use of Cetane for cleaning purposes.

I've been using 2 cycle oil with diesel for several years too .

Does anyone know if the dyed off-road diesel is also low sulfur ?

Back in day when I farmed, dye was the only difference, just a way to prevent cheating. I bet the various farm associations have recommendations since 40 and 50 year old tractors still serve many smaller farmers as well as being used as a utility tractor on midsized farms.

I use both Power Service Diesel Additive as well as 2 stroke oil at a ratio of about 3 to 400:1. Started with the Power service additive as it is always available at WalMarts.
