On some generators, it's best to add a fuel cutoff valve, so the carb will drain somewhat, and the engine will quit from fuel starvation.

My Coleman 5 KW backup at the house had a shutoff valve, and even after 20+ years it started on the 2nd pull.

Also, a dose of Sta-Bil is worthwhile.
