This is what I hope to see when I look closer tomorrow. I will get a better light and crawl in there better. If I'm sure it is the seal, I'll replace it. If I can't find a seal problem I'll pull the timing cover for a really close look.

good trick with the sheet metal screws, works every time.

It appears the Ed gets the cigar! Thumbs Up

Initial inspection shows the seal to be installed improperly. It was 48 degrees last couple mornings, I didn't feel much like playing with Barth. I'll get a close look and replace it soon.

Pulled the harmonic balancer, it appears the seal did not seat around the outside perimeter. A little gasket sealer would have done the trick when installed…

Plenty of room for the puller/installer: (Notice the gray paint… no more "factory black") head bang

Replaced the seal, balancer. Replaced the water pump with new high volume unit. Replaced the fan clutch. Replaced the power steering pump. Ready for PS hoses.

Test drive soon. Tooling Along

I can't seem to get anything done so I just jump around putting out fires. Might even DRIVE the coach one of these days... hmm

Besides, I have a few things that need work on the boat, too. head bang

Did Lynn's leg heal OK? I hate to think of you without a helper when the snow starts again next week.

Cool summer again this year. 49 degrees last night, August! So far no AC.

Nice work Steve, paint looks good, did you repaint the whole motor or just the front? I feel your pain about not being able to get anything done ,I am stalled now on projects on my Barth that I just can't seem to get back to,oh well in due time.

It seems we have the same curse too handy and know to many trades, we tend to never job anything out so when ever something that needs maintenance (the fires that pop up) comes along we are pulled away before completion.

That and I assume you are like me,when ever a family member or friend needs something fixed our projects takes the back seat.

Sound familiar?

Sounds like you are my twin brother, just can't say no to a friend… (good for you) Thumbs Up

I just repainted the front of the engine. I will paint the rest when I work on that. Just finished installing new power steering pump and lines. Had to fabricate one pressure line from brake to steering gear. Refilled power steering and cooling system.

see here: https://www.barthmobile.com/eve...1087061/m/3033979587

I will install new steel lines from transmission to cooler tomorrow and be ready to test drive, finally. Tooling Along

Lynn is getting Better every day whether or not she believes it. I promised her a new shovel for this winter! Sorry

Headed out to finish the skylight. I have to sit still long enough to figure out how to do pics again. I have been using my smarty phone to take pics sometimes.

Steve , I'm ready to install the oil cooler lines on my new 454 HO.

I did a google search to see which ports were the in & out. Results were, the oil supply line coming out of block is closest to the oil filter.

Also it said, the stock bypass valve's (11 psi) should be changed to high pressure bypass valve's (30 psi) or very little oil will go through the oil cooler. (Part # 25161284 high pressure valve)
And a special fitting on the oil supply line (out) should be put on to keep ALL the oil going to the cooler . (part # SD 1540)

Did you do this to your new 454 HO ??

Can you give me your thoughts on this ??

Thanks again , Bob

I was a bit spooked by the GM cooler setup. It appears to be a bypass cooler at best, 3/8 inch lines, divertor valve, etc.

I opted for a full flow cooler setup. The adapter fits between the block and the spin on oil filter. It has 1/2 lines, is full flow when needed, and has a bypass valve for when cold and not needed. I did install the higher pressure valve you mentioned.

I used an adapter from Derale Performance. I think it was Part #15720.

That adapter you got looks like the one on my stock 454 engine except for the oil line fittings.

So I assume you used rubber oil cooler lines from the adapter, by looking at the fittings.

Thanks, Bob

When I broke a line working on something else, I had the local hose shop fab up new braided stainless lines. I think they were about $140, but they should last forever.[I have the block between the engine and filter.]

Thanks Danny , I'll keep that in mind .

I'm going to work on coach today. Thinking of replacing them all just for peace of mind .

I reused the old solid tubes from the OEM 454 adapter, instead of the hose barbs. They reach to the front of the oil pan. Then I used oil cooler hose from engine to cooler. I am not using the radiator oil cooler, I have an after market cooler mounted in front of, and below the radiator. The hoses are about 18 inches long. Braided hose would indeed be the long term answer. Thumbs Up
