Everyone's needs are different, but I would say length first.

When I gutted our living room, we bought a used jacknife one with two loose backrest cushions. That suited me the best. I lie down with one cushion removed for shoulder room and the other in place to raise my left leg. It is perfect for my back. We had it reupholstered with new, firmer foam and the fabric Susan wanted.

We have been happier with it than a new one.
